Anna University (Tamil Nadu) uses a 10-point CGPA scale with grades O (10), A+ (9), A (8), B+ (7), B (6), C (5), U (0 — fail). Percentage = CGPA × 10 per official transcript convention. Enter each subject with credits and grade to compute SGPA and CGPA.
Anna University Regulation 2021 (UG) uses absolute grading on a 10-point scale for all affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu. Unlike earlier regulations that used relative grading (where grade boundaries shifted based on class performance), R2021 fixes the grade boundaries: O grade requires 91-100 marks, A+ requires 81-90, and so on down to U (fail) for marks below 50. A student must score at least 50 out of 100 in the combined total (internal + end-semester) to pass. Internal marks (theory: 20 marks) come from two cycle tests and one model exam. End-semester (theory: 80 marks) is a 3-hour written examination. GPA for one semester: GPA = Σ(grade_points × credits) / Σ(credits). CGPA across all completed semesters: CGPA = Σ(grade_points × credits across all semesters) / Σ(total credits). Percentage equivalent = CGPA × 10. Arrear subjects (U grade) do not enter the GPA calculation — only the grade from the semester in which the student passes enters the calculation. First-semester B.E./B.Tech courses under R2021 typically include MA3151 Matrices and Calculus (4 credits), PH3151 Engineering Physics (3 credits), CY3151 Engineering Chemistry (3 credits), GE3151 Problem Solving and Python Programming (3 credits), and GE3152 Tamil/English (2 credits).

Does an arrear subject count toward CGPA at Anna University?
No. An arrear (U grade) earns 0 grade points. The subject is excluded from GPA until the student clears it. Once passed — whether in the next semester or a later attempt — the passing grade enters CGPA and the U grade is removed from the GPA calculation.
How does Anna University convert CGPA to percentage?
Anna University uses Percentage = CGPA × 10. So an 8.3 CGPA equals 83%. This is a simpler formula than the UGC-recommended CGPA × 9.5; check which one your employer or graduate program requires.
Anna University switched from relative to absolute grading — what changed for students?
Under relative grading (pre-R2019), grade boundaries shifted based on the class distribution, so an 85% in a hard exam might still earn B+ if toppers scored 95+. Under R2021 absolute grading, the same 85% always earns A+ regardless of classmates. Students in tougher courses benefit more from absolute grading.
How is GPA recalculated after a successful revaluation at Anna University?
If revaluation raises the end-semester marks to push the total above the next grade boundary, the grade point increases and the CGPA recomputes. The university issues a revised marksheet. Processing takes 30-60 days after the revaluation result is published.
